Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 13th Sept 2018
Gennel Run Cancellation
Unfortunately tony Mortishire has had to cancel the Gennel Run scheduled for 6th of October. this is due to work commitments. Hopefully Tony will be able to do the run next year, so watch this space. Tony is still doing the VMCC Pre 75 Run on 16th September starting from the Feugh Side Inn near Banchory though. Contact Tony on <[email protected]> for more info.
Moffat Ride In
I have spoken to Andy at Beef tub Bikers, and they are they are arranging parking for us outside the Annandale Arms for the Moffat Ride in on 23rd September. Traditionally this has been the last Velo event of the riding season, so pop in to catch up. We will be there from around 11.00am and there will be coffee and bikkies. Why not stay a bit longer and have lunch?
Malcolm's Run
Malcolm's Run on 2nd Sept went well, with a few minor hitches just to make it memorable enough . Read more about the intrepid exploits in Fife at https://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html
Royce Limb's GTP
I popped in to see Royce the other day as he had finished his GTP build and had the little stroker up and running. . Hopefully he will get it to a few shows before the end of the season. He is now looking to start the rebuild of a diesel engine for his son's narrowboat! Check it out in Member's Bikes on the website. https://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
Christmas Lunch
I know that we are hardly in to September yet, but put down Sunday 2nd of December in your diaries for the traditional Velo/Rudge Lunch at the Robertson Arms in Carnwath. Members further north put Wednesday 19th December on the calendar for the Aberdeen Partner's Dinner. More details to follow.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 17th July 2018
Sad News
Sadly Stuart Tod passed away earlier this week. . Stuart was a stalwart of the club, and regular at the Rogart and Applecross events of the 80s and 90s. When his illness came on, he took the time to organise his photos from that period and send them to me for the website, so you can remember him in happier times on the Nostalgia page. His funeral will be on Shetland, and Stuart Duff assures me it will be a good send off. An appreciation of Stuart's life will appear in Fishtail. Our thoughts are with Joanne and his family.
Biggar Show
The stand for Biggar is booked for the 12th August. If you haven't told me you want to be in the show yet, we may be able to squeeze you in, but get in touch soon.If not come along to the show and say hello.
Arran Show
Lenny Hartley was pleased as there was a good Velo turnout at the Arran Show this year, with Harry McMaster taking the trip over the water on his blue MAC. Paul Williams also took his GTP and was rewarded with Peoples Choice and Best in Show. GTPs are really starting to pile up the show awards!
Classic Motorcycle Roadtest
With my VMCC hat on, I had to get together some bikes from Scottish members to be tested by Tim Britton for Classic Motorcycle. Although my Viper was a no show on the day, Peter Occleston brought along his KSS. Tim thought it was a great bike, and Gary, who had come all the way from Lincolnshire to take the snaps got some wonderful shots in the grounds of Harwood House, near Biggar. Watch out for the road test in the magazine soon.
Malcolm's Run
Don't forget to put the 2nd September in your diary for Malcolm's Run. The usual Dundee start and a trip around Tayside and Fife. For more details contact Malcolm on 01337 830452.
GPDR and e-mail List
The new circulation list only contains members who responded to the 'opt in' e-mail. If you know anyone who is complaining that they haven't received any Updates, tell them to get in touch and I will add them on to the circulation list. Likewise, new members now must approach me before I can add them to the list, so if you know anyone who has just joined, tell them to get in touch too.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 14th September 2017
Meet Up and Ride In 24th September Beef Tub Bikers Moffat
Remember to put Sunday 24th September into your diaries as this is our first ride in to the Beef Tub Bikers at Moffat. We will be outside the Town Hall from 11.00am and there should be some refreshments laid on. It would be nice to get a good turn out for this as BTB are putting a lot of effort into this.
Drop me a line if you are going to come along, or phone me on 0131 669 9219.
Biggar Show
As usual, we had a great turnout and great day for the Biggar Show, with 12 bikes on the stand. Keith Burdon has a bit of a glitch when after about half a mile from home he heard some parping noises from the new engine in his MSS, the sure sign of a blowing head gasket. He had to turn around and ended up coming on his Interpol. You can see a pic of us all in our corporate Scottish Centre gear (except Keith….)
Willie Malone had his Venom Special at the show. He had the engine, frame and gearbox lying around, and rather than bankrupt himself buying genuine parts, he used other bits he had in the garage. Love it or loath it, it certainly makes a statement. The two tone tank and seat are great!
Alan Parker had a bit of off when getting his Venom away from the field. His throttle stuck open and in trying to stall the bike, he dropped it. A couple of bruises and scuffs, but both bike and rider OK
See the pics at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Malcolm’s Run
We had fun on Malcolm’s Run. I caught up with George Ogg on the way up to Dundee and we had breakfast in Tescos while waiting for the hoards to appear. Gino Rondelli caught up with at the lunch stop, when he saw the gaggle of Velos parked up.
Malcolm has done a write up for this on check it out at
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html
There are some photos, including Rob’s Alpacas at
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
The Gennel Run, Sunday 1st October.
The start is as usual from The Gennel AB31 6DP. Bacon rolls and tea from 09.30 then depart 10.30 ish to take in a little of south Deeside before heading inland towards Strathdon and the lunchtime stop. The return route takes us through some open countryside on the straight and level back to The Gennel. Idea Velo-ing countryside. Any one wishing to “camper van” overnight or park a car and trailer at The Gennel is more than welcome. Total mileage approximately 90m so a pleasant day out and a not too demanding route. For more details contact Tony Mortshire on07887 740396

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 16th August 2017
Here is the current Velocetting news in Scotland
Cover Picture 445
It was great to see the gang from the Peebles run splashed across the front cover of the last edition of Fishtail. In the frenzy to get the photo to Peter, I had forgotten who had taken it. I was reminded that it was Gordon Mowat behind the camera, who explained quite logically, ‘off course it was me, I wasn’t in the photo was I…’.
The photo also elicited an e-mail from Jim Plant, who had information to pass on to Maurice about the previous history of his KSS. It had previously belonged to Roy Harvison from Reading who died about 10 years ago and was a VOC Thames Valley Centre. Small world.
Generous Donation
We were deeply moved that the Club committee decided to make the generous donation to the Marie Curie and Crossroads in memory of Ron Sabey, and is a fitting memorial to him.
Sound of the Singles
I popped down to see the start of the VMCC Sound of the Singles Run. My son Ben and I had a sumptuous breakfast from the Big Red Barn near Biggar before waving off the run, which was led by our own Gordon Johnston on his MSS, with George Ogg and Ron Martin completing the Velo contingent, although Philip Hogg did turn up on his Vincent. There should be a few pictures at
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
GTP project
I went up to Perth to visit Royce Limb, and his GTP project. It has sat in a shed since 1962, and although it had nearly 30 years of use before it was laid up, the engine remained relatively unmolested. Royce has started wok on some of the cycle parts and has sent the wheels off to Barrie Brown (01333 352102 ) to be rebuild and is soaking the piston in diesel to try to free it off. At the speed he is getting down to it, it should be purring along in the not too distant future.
Oily MAC
Dave Bell was in touch. He has recently bought a rigid MAC, which was wet sumping. He is going to fit a non return valve, but is gradually building up confidence in it with longer runs round Perthshire on it. There is a photo on the website at
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
Dad’s Old Velocette MAC
Stuart Todd has been searching through cyberspace and found this on YouTube. A song that combines Velocettes and music (well nearly). It’s a bigger sob story than ‘Old Shep’ but some nice old photo's on the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP0iitNkKTU
Malcolm’s Run
Malcolm’s Run will depart from Tesco’s car park at Riverside in Dundee at 11.00 am on Sunday the 3rd September. It is always a great run, and a credit to Malcolm’s planning, so try to make along to it. Details are attached. I will also be putting the route and map on the website in the next few days. As a bonus the run will pass within 1/4 mile of Rob Falconer's home, and Rob has generously offered that participants are most welcome to visit Higham House, for tea and cake, and a chance to see his Alpacas!

Beeftub Bikers
Remember to put Sunday 24th September into your diaries as this is our first ride in to the Beeftub Bikers at Moffat. We will be at the Town Hall and there should be some refreshments laid on.
Velocette Talk
I have foolishly agreed to do a talk on the ‘Brief History of Velocette’ (apologies to Stephen Hawking)for the Edinburgh VMCC. If you want to come along and heckle, it is on Monday 18th September at the Newliston Arms, Kirkliston EH299AB.
Parts Wanted
Andy Goodwin is looking for the following parts for a Thuxtonalike project.Velo RS swinging arm frame. Prefer late one, large tank fittings, but will consider any, Complete cylinder head/rocker box for a Thruxton or just parts. Complete gear cluster for a series 12 box, R suffix. Also require main shaft for same. Rear sets for Thruxton.Genuine Thruxton or large capacity Venom petrol tank. Andy can be contacted on 07765257463 or [email protected]
MSS for Sale
Andy Lawson is thinking of selling his 1955 MSS. He can be contacted at [email protected]
New Member
A welcome to new members Steven Woods, Alistair Mclauchlan and Theo Smith. A particular welcome to Dougie Lambourne, who you will know from our joint Velocette Rudge Xmas lunches over the past few years, and is currently Chairman of the Rudge Enthusiasts Club.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 14th July 2017
It seems ages since I sent out an update, so here is the latest
Peebles Run
Our visit to Peebles had a slightly rocky start when, whilst leading the short social run on the Monday night, Tim Miller’s front wheel slipped away and he had a fall. Although he managed to finish the run, he went to hospital afterwards, finding that as well as some bad bruising, he had cracked a few ribs. Although he couldn’t do any more riding, Ester brought him to the Tuesday meal, but we were under strict instructions not to make him laugh.
Tuesday’s ride took us through Innerleithen and on towards Gifford in East Lothian where we had a fine lunch at the Goblin Ha. Our afternoon run took us to the visit to the Scottish Mining Museum at Newtongrange before the return to Peebles and dinner at the Tontine Hotel, where the usual selection of random awards was given out.
Wednesday brought us the run that Tim had set. This took us through many twists and turns to the Pearie Law Wind Farm where we close up view of the giants that are stalking the landscape. Backtracking a little, we headed towards New Lanark to our lunchstop at the model industrial town, now a World Heritage Centre, before back to Peebles. There are pics of event at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Great thanks to Tim Miller for the route planning and to the staff of the Tontine Hotel.
Swinging Arm KSS for Sale
Mike Coxton's brother is selling his Velo. It's a 1947 KSS mk 11 engine in a 1959 MSS frame. It was originally built in the 70's with the registration number being the original 1959 one.
Mike says the bike is in good shape and built well,. It starts easy and runs very well. If you are interested, the bike is in Cheshire and John can be contacted on 07508 808 143. Price £7950.
VMCC Sound of the Singles Run
This will start at 10.30am on Sunday 16 July 2017 starting at the Big Red Barn Café north of Biggar. Clyde Valley VMCC. Ideal for your Velo and there was a good turn out last year.
Arran Classic Bike Show
If you want too do a bit of island hopping, there is still time to head off to the Arran Classic Bike Show on Sunday 16th July, The AJS an Matchless Club are the prime movers for theis event, bbut Lenny Hartley would be overjoyed if a few more Velos turned up. More details at http://www.arranmuseum.co.uk/motorcycle-show/
Edinburgh VMCC Inter-Club Invitational Night. Ride in
This will be from 7.30 on Monday 17 July 2017 to the Newliston Arms. Edinburgh VMCC. All clubs welcome, so bring your Velo or yourself .It is a good mixed turnout so there will be something different to see and chat about to the other owners.
Biggar Rally
Our next outing is to the Biggar Rally, on the 13th of August. We already have a good entry for the stand. Hopefully it will be a nice sunny day, so come along, have an ice cream and a burger and enjoy the day. We will all be wearing our new Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre T-shirts, so you can't miss us!
Angus Run
An early reminder for Malcolm's Run on Sunday 3rd September 2017 from Dundee. More details nearer the time.
GTP News
The club was looking for someone to champion the poor old GTP. Since I had so many bits, I ended up putting myself forward for the post. As there were no other takers, I got the job! Hopefully I can co-ordinate the technical information that is out there, find sources of spares, get people on touch with each other and generally fly the flag for these little two strokes. I will probably try to do this through a new website, so watch this space!
Talking about GTPS, Royce Limb has finally got his 37 bike up from Hampshire, and it looks complete, but since it hasn't been on the road since the early 60's just about everything has seized on it. He needs new exhausts and silencers and getting it sorted should keep him busy over the winter.
John Rogerson is still looking for a GTP project, so if you have one you need to go to a new home, this is your chance. Get in touch with him at b16ess@yahoo.co.uk
I put some pics of Mike Endersby's 1932 3 speeder on the website. Mike is having fun buzzing around Stranraer on it, although he had a slight seizure problems, which hopefully was just due to the tightness of the newly rebuilt engine. http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
MSS Progress
My rigid MSS has been in Keith Burdon's tender care. New engine is now in place, but every time he is in touch there is another bodge from the previous owner he has discovered. The best so far was the speedo cable made out of a solid piece of bar bent to shape and stuck into the knackered speedo gearbox. Hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel and it will be ready for Biggar!
Venom for Sale
Shortly there should be a very nice Venom for sale on behalf of a club member. If you are interested, please drop me a line. Further details will be avaliable soon.
That's all the news I can remember, so if there is something I have missed out , drop me a line.
Best wishes

Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 17th April 2017
AGM
The AGM went off with out a hitch. The John Wheeler Shield and a bottle of whisky went to Stewart Winton, who stepped down as Treasurer after nearly 40 years. It was a much deserved award. Tm Miller has stepped up as the new Treasurer, and Keith and myself being reelected for another year. Sould be some pics on the website at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Peter's Run
Peter Oram's two runs on the 9th and 10th of April were both resounding successes, with 12 bikes on the Sunday run and 5 on the monster Appin Run on Monday. Tim has done a write up of the Appin Run and there are some pics on the website, with more to go on in the next few days..
Do you have a 3/16th Whitworth Helicoil Kit?
Have you a 3/16 Whitworth Helicoil or Recoil set of tools that Jim McKechnie could borrow?
Whilst removing excess gunk from the threads of the timing case screws one of the holes which already had an insert in it moved in deeper, so he I will needs to remove it and replace with a longer insert. If you can lend his the kit, contact him on jim.mckechnie@talktalk.net
Viper Reg No 171 RNN,
Peter Sentance has been offered a Viper with above registration which he believes to be a Scottish bike from Inverness He wondered if anyone had any record of it's history. It may be one of the E-bay scam listings, so he wants to check. If you recognise it, contact him on pierrelesundance@outlook.com
Any Rigid MACS or MOVS?
Duncan Makinnon is looking for a pre war 250 or 350. Preferably a MAC or MOV, but will consider other girder , rigid bikes. If you have anything in the garage that you want to pass on, contact him on
Suzuki GSF 600 Bandit for Sale
Peter Occleston is selling his 2000 Suzuki Bandit. 31472 miles, new tyres, new chain and sprockets, fresh oil and filter, new brake pads and a very recent MOT. Beowolf end can with an easily removable mute fitted.BARGAIN at £1200. Call Peter on 01968 677847 or 07990 845 411
T Shirts, Polo Shirts and Fleeces
Anyone attending the AGM will have seen the sample T shirts I had made up. They are black with Velocette Owners Club Scotland on them in yellow. I am planning to get t shirts printed and, polo shirts and fleeces embroidered with the logo. If you are interested in one, please get in touch. T shirts will be about £9, with fleeces about £20. No price for polo shirts yet. There will probably be a pic on the website with me wearing the t shirt at the AGM, although, to be perverse, i got mine printed in red.
Velo Jumpers
There has been a lot of talk about the old Velocette knitted jumpers recently. Ron Martin has dug out the original pattern and I have copied it here http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html Anyone wh knows how to knit it from this please contact my as there could be a few orders coming your way!
I am just getting ready to go on my annual pilgrimage to Stafford, so will see what's happening on the club stand, and may bump into some of you.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 5th March 2017. AGM Notification
Hi again
AGM 2nd April
Another reminder for the Centre AGM on the 2nd of April at the Robertson Arms in Carnwath. The Agenda and previous minutes are attached. If we get there for 12.30 pm we can have lunch and a chat before business commences at 1.30pm.
Unfortunately I had a computer crash which wiped the original minutes, so have had to reconstruct them from notes, so if there are any errors, please get in touch.
Hopefully the weather will be good and we can a good number of bike in attendance. Due to the success of last year’s arrangements, please bring any bits and bobs you want to get rid off and we can have another bring an buy sale afterwards
Peter’s Run 9th April
Peter Oram has done the routes for his run on the 9th of April and these are also attached. He is having a hernia operation on March 3rd, so will have 3 weeks not riding, but he hoes to be up and around by the AGM.Give Peter Oram a ring on 01764 681300 for more details of the run or e-mail on
[email protected]
Due to Dave Moffat and Geoff Brazendale not being able to continue with the organisation , Peter has also taken over the running of the VMCC Girder Fork Run in Castle Douglas in May. What a guy!
Vintage Velos
I had forgotten to say that Stuart Tod had been in touch with some pics of the two vintage two strokes he has just brought over from the Isle of Man. They are a EL3 and AC3 and there are photos at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
Stuart has finally got UK registrations for them. Luckily the club was a great help, although the EL3 has been more of an issue as it is just before the VOC records began. The AC3 was a bit easier as it had the original frame etc and was in the club records. He is now looking for one of the Penny shaped fuel taps for the EL3 if anyone has any spare. He has put an ad to Fishtail, but maybe someone local has one..
Grant Velos
I managed to get in touch with Michael Fraser, who bought one of the Grant brothers bikes. He has now got the bike registered with an age related plate with help from Roger Franklin, and is happy with that outcome an is in the process of restoring it to it’s former glory.
Lanark Autojumble
I had a great time at the Lanark Autojumble as ever and about every second person seemed to be a VoC member! Unfortunately Keith Burden couldn’t make it as he was working hard bringing Glasgow it’s new water supply. As usual, there didn’t seem to be enough time so apologies if I looked a bit like a headless chicken as I tried to chat and get round everything at the same time.
Bill Barclay and Maurice Clark were the recipients of Ron Martin’s old Fishtails. Good reading for the long winter nights. Thanks again to Ron’s generosity.
I have put up a Rouges gallery from some of the members I came across. Apologies to Ron Martin and Paul Williams, who I forgot to photograph when I had a chat with them, and to Tim Miller, who I saw across a crowded cow pen, but didn’t manage to catch up with. Try to spot yourself at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Birthday Treat
I had been contacted by Eric Dale in November. Eric owned a1956 Velo MAC over 50 years which sadly was broken up when he was unable to afford a comprehensive engine repair. Of all the bikes he owned this was his favourite. He will be 80 this September and wondered if there would be the possibility of
'recapturing his youth' by arranging a ride on a member's single. He is fit, and active. He I live in the Borders but would be prepared to travel for this perfect birthday treat. Ideally the ride would take place on a private surfaced road so as notto 'mix-it' with today's traffic. If anyone is willing to help Eric fulfil his birthday dream, please get in touch with him at [email protected]
Mod in out Midst
Tony Richards has been in touch to say that he has gone over to the "other side" This winter has seen a box of corroded parts dismantled 30 years ago a Triumph Tigress 250cc 4 stroke Scooter. A brave man as all the tinwork is was more like restoring a small car. Buoyed by this visit to his Mod side, Tony would be interested iin anyone selling a Velo Viceroy. Get in touch at [email protected] .He recently discussed the Viceroy 2 stroke engine with an ex employee of Hoverair,. Their machine used 3 tuned Viceroy engines and was, according to Tony, a bit of a marvel.
Peebles Run 16th and Wed 17th May
More entries are coming in for the Peebles Run on Tues 16th and Wed 17th May 2017, with 19 signed up so far. Roger and Jane Franklin are threatening to come if their dates pan out OK, and they would be very welcome. If you haven’t told me you are going to come along, get in touch soon. There are still places at both the Tontine and the Park Hotels, with some members even having booked the palatial splendour of Peebles Hydro!,
Centre Spread
Finally, all you who subscribe to Real Classics will have seen the magnificent centre spread of our own Ian Spinney in this months issue. Although Velos are mentioned along the way, the article focuses on Ian’s other addiction of Royal Enfields. If you don’t get the mag, nick your mates to check it out.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 2nd February 2017
Hi all!
A few responses to the last update.
Malcolm Kervell had an LE engine under the bench so was able to help out John Rogerson with his LEVAL project. Great thanks to Malcolm.
Alastair Alexander is on the look out for a late Mk 1 KSS toolbox. It is the angular job with a tin lip on the front and three quarters of the front covered in leather. It is also used on early MACS and MOVs. If you have a spare one or are willing to provide the dimensions so Alastair can have one made, he would appreciate it.
Ron Martin is clearing some space in the loft.and has a load of Fishtail magazines which will be heading to the recycling bin if nobody wants them.(No200 - 254 Aug '84 to July '92 No 268 - 336 Dec '94 to Dec '03) You know you want to read about Velo's from the time when a 1938 Mov fully restored was £800 and a road going springer MAC was £650....from going spare No200. He is going to bring them to the Lanark autojumble, so if you want some you can pick them up there. Otherwise I will be taking the leftovers back home with me.Finally, I am trying to find out what info is needed in relation to the Grant brothers bikes in order to keep the reg nos. Will keep you all posted.
Might see some of you in Lanark on Sunday.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 29th January 2017
Hi all!
I was glad to read in last Fishtail’s Chairman’s Scrapbook that Roger was helping the new owners of the Grant brothers Venoms to get them registered. It’s a pity that the frames have been swapped over the years, however it is possible that the originals are lying around in someone’s shed. If you think that you can bring them back together, drop me a line. It would be a pity if the identity of the bikes was lost and they ended up with age related numbers.
With the Lanark Autojumble on the 5th of February heralding the start of another motorcycling year in Scotland, we have a lot to look forward to. Keith Burden should have a stall, so go and say hi to him. Hopefully catch up with a few of you there.
Our next major event is the Centre AGM on the 2nd of April at the Robertson Arms in Carnwath. Hopefully the weather will be good and we can a good number of bike in attendance. There might even be prizes!
The following week on the 9th April we have Peter’s Run to look forward to. Another interesting and varied route round Stirling and Perthshire. Give Peter Oram a ring on 01764 681300 for more details.
Speaking of Peter, he was awarded the 'Places of Interest Shield' by Stirling Castle VMCC. Congratulations to him!
As a result of last year’s Rally, we have been contacted by Beef Tub Bikers, based in the Moffat area, who are keen to promote the social side of motorcycling. .
One of the ideas is to hold an event on the last Sunday of the month from April to September. Beef Tub Bikers will hire the Town Hall frontage for bike parking and display, creating a small scale bike show and riders can show off and talk about their bikes. I have booked the Velocette Owners Club in for the event on 24th September, so put this in your diary so we can have a good turnout and show off out bikes. If you want more details about Beef Tub Bikers events, contact Andy Tunnicliffe on 07801491222 or [email protected]
We have had a great deal of interest iin the Peebles Run on Tues 16th and Wed 17th May 2017, with over a dozen signing up for it already. There have been some issues with bookings for the Tontine Hotel, however there are still rooms available at the discounted rate Alternatively, a few of the guys have booked in to the Park Hotel, just down the road If you are having problems, please contact me.
Lenny Hartley has again reminded me that the Arran classic bike show is on the July 16th 2017 and is looking for Velo club members to come along. If you fancy some island hopping, pop over and you won’t be disappointed.
Jock McComisky is progressing well after his hip operation, and has already booked his sailing s for the Ulster Grand Prix, and then on to the Manx. You can’t keep a good man down! He has taken a slight sidestep from Velos and is working on a 1934 ohv 250.BSA and is on the lookout for a.Maglyta or or magneto for it. If you can help, drop me a line and I will pass it on.
Finally, congratulations to Willie Williams for his 40 year stint as a member of the club! Here’s to the next 40!

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 8th November 2016
Hi All!
Many of you will remember the Grant brothers, who were two of the mainstays of the Velocette scene in Scotland for many years. Carol Grant has kept John and Bill's Venoms since they passed away, but finally felt that it was time for them to go to a new home. Father and son team William and Michael Fraser from Dornoch are now the proud owners and are looking forward to bringing them back to their former glory. Though it was quite a wrench for Carol to part with them, the family are happy because they could not have gone to a better home - and they are still together! All the Fraser family have long been 'into' Velos and young Michael used to visit Bill regularly to admire the Velos and spend hours talking bikes!
The Gennel Run was an exciting new fixture on the programme this year, with seven Velos including two rigids enjoying a ride around Deeside in early October. Much thanks to Tony Mortishire on organising the event. The write up is at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html and the photos at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html Same time next year Tony? Also congratulations on Tony becoming Secretary of the North East Scottish Section of the VMCC.
On the same day Paul Williams and Jim McKillop met up at the Rest & Be Thankful to enjoy the unseasonably good weather. Unfortunately the run wasn’t entirely uneventful, as Paul’s bike 'nipped up’ just 3 miles from home and only 300 miles since it’s rebuild. It could have been a lot worse as he had just come through a 1 mile long series of bends, so at least the old girl waited until I was on a straight before locking the back wheel up!! Paul is a glutton for punishment as he went to the Stafford Show and came back with a KSS from Bonham’s auction. Watch this space for an update on progress.
Jim Harkness has just completed the rebuild of his Venom and has fitted an electric start as part of the process. See it at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html . I am beginning to feel a bit left out as my Venom seems to be the only one without an electric boot these days. Luckily it still starts first kick!
Harry McMaster was having problems finding new brake shoes for his Famous Blue MAC. The ones available from the dealers seemed to be Bantam based and needed modification. Anyone know of a supply of proper ones? Harry was even contemplating getting new ones cast.
I went to the ‘From Cinders to Shale’ Speedway Museum at Loanhead on the 6th of November and saw a few familiar faces, however as I had two rather bored children in tow, wasn’t able to stay for as long as I had wished. Unfortunately, due to dropping visitors numbers they are planning to end the open days, but will be open for special tours, so we might organise something next year if there is enough interest.
Hope to see you at the Xmas lunch at the Robertson Arms Carnwath on the 4th December . Please get in touch with me to confirm you are coming and give me your menu choices.
Good luck to the the Aberdeen crew for their Dinner, at the Newmachar Hotel on the 14th December 2016.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 30th September 2016
Malcolm’s Run on 4th September might end up being named the Supermarket Sweep as it started at Tesco’s in Dundee and ended after 112 miles of fun at Sainsbury’s at Broughty Ferry. There was an excellent turnout, with 2 KSS’s, 1 MAC, 3 Vipers and 5 Venoms, giving a total of 11 Velo mounted riders. The route went past Dunsinane, made famous by Shakespeare in Macbeth. The curse of the Three Witches was to make it’s presence known later in the run.To find out how, read Malcolm's write up at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html or wait for the abridged version in the next Centre News in Fishtail.
The West Coast Ride on the 18th September was again the Maritime Museum Café in Irvine. Due to other competing events on that day, there was a small, but select group who arrived shortly after 11.00 am comprising Tony Richardson, Jim McKechnie, Tim Miller and Angus Cameron The bikes excited some curiosity from a group of cyclists, one of whom asked if they were “some Chinese or Indian replica”. The reply involved a polite mention of the virtues of Irvine Harbour as a swimming pool at low tide.
After that the group had a tour of the “Carola” and the “Spartan”, iron-hulled Clyde boats laid up on the dock. Tony and Angus gave a guided inspection of the sorry state of these boats, lamenting the lack of preservation activity, and the four of had a jolly good moan about the decline of the Empire (Other cinema chains are available…).
It's not too late to sign up for Tony Mortishire's Aberdeenshire Run on Sunday 2nd of October. It will start at 10.30 from the Gennel and heading down the coast for lunch stop. Contact Tony on 01330 844322 or 07887740396 for more details.
The next event after this is the meet up on 6th November 2016 at the Loanhead Speedway Museum. Contact me on 0131 669 9219 or e-mail [email protected] if you are planning to go along. It is a fantastic collection, and only open a few days a year. Clyde Valley VMCC will also be going along that Sunday.
I know it seems a long way off, but Xmas is creeping up fast. The get togethers are Sunday 4th December for the lunch at the, Robertson Arms, Carnwath and 14th December for Aberdeen dinner at Newmachar Hotel. Here is the link to the Robertson Arms menu: http://robertsonarmshotel.com/welcome/festive-lunch-menu/ Please drop me a line if you are planning to come along.
Finally, John Rogerson is looking for a GTP. You can see John's lovely red LE in the Members Bikes at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html or get a copy of his monograph on Jimmy Guthrie. If you have GTP which is looking for a new home, drop him a line at [email protected] , or he will probably be at the Peebles Autojumble on Sunday.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 12th Sept 2016
Hi all!
The next event is the West Coast Ride In next Sunday, 18th September. This is to the cafe at the Maritime Museum in Irvine. Arrive from 11.00 am onward for brunch and a chat.
Unfortunately I will not be able to make it, but Keith Burden, our Chairman should be around on his red MSS. Drop me a line if you are going so Keith knows who to look for.
Malcolm's run went well, although, they did manage to close the Tay Bridge to traffic...More on this in the full report to come! There are a few pics of the intrepid band on the website at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html . Photos by Tim Millar. As well as his piece in the last Fishtail, Tim has written a small piece on oil tank fittings. See it here
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html
Finally, Paul Williams is looking for a pre war project now he is on the home straight with his Viper/Venom rebuild. Anything from a GTP to a KSS considered, but I think he was hoping for a MOV or MAC. Anyone looking to pass on anything suitable, get in touch with him at [email protected] . If you want a look at his Viper/Venom, here it is http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 23rd August 2016
Hi all!
We had a great day for the Clyde Valley VMCC Sound of the Single Run, led by Gordon Johnston, not on his MSS, but a BSA B31 this time. Roger Perry came down from Dundee on his Venom, breaking his recent run of bad luck by making the start. Ron Martin came across from the West. The start was at the newly opened Big Red Barn cafe, outside Biggar, an excellent destination for some coffee and cake if you have not yet been. The run took us round the reservoirs and down to Eskdailmuir for lunch at the Community Hub. This is just across the road from the Samye Ling Centre, which we went to on the Moffat Run a couple of months ago
The Edinburgh VMCC Inter Club Ride In in July had a change of venue and was at their new meeting place at the Liston Arms at Kirkliston. A great turnout from VJMC as well as other British bike clubs swelled the numbers. Dave Stewart and wife Mary arrived on Dave’s Seymour modded Venom, which looked very smart. Jock McComisky came along on his faithful Venom, with George Ogg on his Norton until he has sorted out the gremlins in his Velo, Peter Occleston was on his Suzuki, giving the KSS a well-deserved rest. George Muir was there too, checking out the arrivals with his usual banter..
Talking of Peter Occleston, he is racking up the awards again. The most recent, which he is trying to keep quiet, was at the Dam Run where he was awarded a trophy for survival, the highest combined age of rider and bike. To save Peter’s blushes I won’t give the total, but did remind him it is a number he can only improve on in the future!
Peter also has had Barry Brown modify his decompression lever to take an o ring ro eliminate the weep from it. This was not as easy as you might think, because of hardness of the spindle. If you are interested in the mod, contact Barry at [email protected] .
We had a great turn out for the Biggar Rally, with 8 Velos and one Vincent and Steib. Willie and Linda Williams have promised to do better next year and bring the Venom! Others on our stand were Tim Miller, Malcolm Kervell, John Swapp, Roger Perry, Ron Martin, Jim McKechney, Keith Burdon and myself. Rob Falconer brought his E-type this year, so was banished to the car enclosures. Angus Cameron had a chat and promised to bring his Velo to the West Coast Ride In this year.
Outwith the club stand, Jim Campbell brought his recently rebuild Venom Clubman, with only 40 miles on the clock,, complete with electric start and Ariel Square Four Battery box.. The attention to detail in his rebuild is fantastic, with a lot of sensible upgrades including sturdy Triumph sourced front mudguard stays, alloy levers with the correct throw and impressive rearsets.. The pics of the bike before show how much work was needed. http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
We also had the best call off excuse, from Ernie Page, who had been looking forward to the show and meeting up with friends but had to sort out a Theatre Group from California (30 plus cast) who were performing at the Edinburgh Festival and had their stage furniture props for the show stored in his garages
Malcolm’s Run will be on 4th September 2016. It will be the usual Dundee start with a great amble around the Angus countryside. Route details are on the website. Put the date in your diary.I have attached the route detail and have also put them on the websitehttp://velocettescotland.weebly.com/malcolms-run-2016.html For more details, contact Malcolm Kervell on 01337 830452.
The West Coast Ride In will be on 18th September 2016. Venue will again be the Maritime Museum Café in Irvine. Meet from around 10.30 onward for a get together and brunch. Contact me for more detail.
Tony Mortishire has generously agreed to put on a run in Aberdeenshire at the end of the season. It will be on Sunday 2nd of October, starting at 10.30 from the Gennel and heading down the coast towards Johnsonhaven for lunch. Contact Tony on 01330 844322 or 07887740396 for more details.
I will be off to the Manx at the end of the week, and might catch up with some of you there.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 27th June 2016
Hi all!
Jim Plant has done a great write up of the Moffat Rally. It will be in the next Fishtail, but I have put in on the website if you want a sneak preview. http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html ,Alll I will say is that it was a sun drenched couple of days and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. It was great to see Ron Sabey coming along to the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum to be presented with the President’s Cup by Jim Plant. As well as photos from those at the rally, we also had Jonathan Cosens, the local photographer taking a few pics. You can see the results at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
As well as clearing the board at the Peebles Bike Show this year, winning both its class, and Chairman’s Choice. Peter Occleston also entered the Scottish Classic Motorcycle Show in Ayr. The bike did the 160 mile round trip without missing and he managed to stay dry as well. He was rewarded with another class win. Peter is now fitting a new shelf to hold all his silverware!
Have a look at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
On the Monday evening of 18th of July we have the Edinburgh VMCC Inter Club Ride In to the Ratho Park Hotel. A good excuse for a nice summer evening run and a natter. Check it out if you’ve not been along before.
As usual, we are looking forward to the Biggar Rally on 14th August, If you want to be on the stand, please get in touch soon so I can put your details on the application form.
Slightly further on we have Malcolm’s Run on 4th September 2016. It will be the usual Dundee start and run around the Angus countryside. Put the date in your diary and we will send out more details later.
Stuart Tod has sent me his photos from old Scottish Centre events. I have put them on the website, so if you want a good fix of nostalgia, have a look at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/nostalgia-page.html
Peter Newton is thinking of getting a Velocette Venom. He had a go at starting mine at the Edinburgh VMCC Capital Café Run last week and was surprised how easy it was! If anyone is thinking of selling a Venom, drop me the details and I will pass them on to Peter.
Mike Williams has reminded me about the forthcoming Velo Club be France Rally at Tourville sur Pont Audemer, Normandy on 2 to 4 September 2016. This year’s rally has been advertised in Fishtail, but Mike is trying to drum up some more support from the UK contingent.
He is planning to attend again this year and intends to make the crossing from Poole to Cherbourg, probably taking his 1947 MSS. This is a shortish (c.4 hour) crossing and the return cost at present is about £135 (less if you stay on until midweek). The all inclusive cost of the rally is forecast to be 120 – 140 euros per person, sharing basic accommodation.
I know that Roger Perry and Willie Williams have plans to go, but if anyone else is interested, please contact Mike on[email protected]
Jim Plant goes out regularly with the North Cotswold VMCC and there's a guy there called Richard Taylor who is Arthur Taylor's son. Nice. He remembers the racing Venom they had. He thinks the reg. was VUE681. It is believed it came to Scotland. Has anyone any memories of it, or is it still here/ It would be nice for Richard to know what happened to his dad’s bike, and the current owner to know a bit more of its illustrious past. If you know anything, contact Jim on [email protected]
Paul Williams has made good progres with the rebuild of his uncle’s Venomised Viper, and it now has a MOT. We look forward to hearing of his riding experience with it.
Finally, at the Moffat Rally, Brian Coldicott gave Ian Spinney a copy of the famous VOC knitting pattern. Watch this space as Ian had got his mother to start knitting up the pullover. Soon everyone will want one!
Best wishes

http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
I will have more photos from the local professional photographer later in the week, . Brian Coldicott has also done a dropbox of pics from the run at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/126265105@N02/albums/72157668303295586
One of the highlights was Ron Sabey being presented with the President's Cup by Jim Plant. Ron had been awarded this by Ivan at the Club AGM in April. He looked pretty chuffed at getting it and it was very well deserved.
The Centre AGM has now passed, with a good turnout to the lunch at the Robertson Arms at Carnwath. with the usual suspects re elected for another year. Stewart Winton complained that he only intended to take on the Treasurers job for about 6 months, but had been saddled with it for 34 years so far! He was persuaded to hang on in for another term to bring it up to an nice round 35, but is looking for someone to take over next year. Don’t get trampled in the rush to apply! Great thanks to Stewart for his sterling service over the years. Is he the longest serving Centre official in the club?
This year Malcolm Kervill was awarded the John Wheeler Shield for his services to the Centre, and luckily he had some pannier to carry it home! We are looking forward to his run on 4th of September.
We had members arriving on bikes, with 4 being Velos, so they were awarded a small token for braving the still cold spring weather to get there. Tim Miller brought a cornucopia of delights to the Bring and Buy sale. I ended up going home with a diverse haul including a set of starting rollers and an electric bicycle!
The previous weekend we had a great time at Peter’s Run, with 11 riders turning up for a ramble through Perthshire. Along with Peter Oram and myself we had Phil Hogg, Malcolm Kerville, Maurice Clark, Rob Falconer, Alf Burgess, Tim Miller, Victor Poots, Ron Martin and Tony and Sue Mortshire. Due to accident pushing a friends Yamaha Virago, I had damaged my foot, so was unable to start the Venom, so came on my oversized electric start Bavarian Valiant. Roger Perry had to call off en route when his Venom failed to restart at a petrol station. Luckily he has now sorted this out.
Peter led us from Perth, through Comrie and along some interesting, but buttock clenching downhill hairpin bends through Glen Quaich. I felt quite pleased to get round them unscathed, before I realised that the switchback was repeated, but going uphill at the end of the road. Peter did let slip that once he had done it on a large Japanese tourer and had got stuck in the middle and had to step off it. Thanks Peter! Tony Mortishire’s Norton ( Velo still being worked on…) managed to break it’s front belt drive pulley. He left it at the lunch stop at the Bridge of Lochay Hotel with his wife Sue sacrificing the second part of the run to stay at the hotel and drink wine until Tony returned with the trailer after having been chauffeured back by Philip Hogg.
At the Peebles Bike Show this year we had John Rogerson's LE, which brought a bit of colour. He bought it new and used it to go to work on, sold it to a friend, then bought it back and restored it. Peter Occleston's KSS however cleared the board, with a class win and Chairman's choice. Have a look at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
We will be looking forward to the Biggar Rally on 14th August, so if you want your bike to be on the stand, please get in touch so I can put your details on the application form. The Club have been kind enough to allow us some expenditure towards the display at Biggar, and we are looking at the best way to spend the money to raise the Club’s profile. Any ideas welcome!
Stuart Tod has finally finished scanning all his photos and is going to burn all the relevant VOC ones onto a DVD for the Scottish club records. There are loads of Rogart and Kenmore photo's but also some he had forgotten about over the years like Glentrool and when they met up with the 'other VOC' at places like Hawkshead.
He is bearing up well through his treatment and still getting regular calls from Brian Cook and Stewart Duff and some of the 'Old VOC' crew. If you want to drop him a line, get in touch with me and I will pass it on..
Paul Williams has been in touch again. He is progressing well with the rebuild of his uncle’s Venomised Viper, and with Jim McKillop’s help has found a company which made up a jig to machine timing covers to fit rev counter drives. If you need one done, contact Mike at Blane Precision Engineering on 01360 550492.
Ron Martin is looking for a rigid MOV or MAC. Anyone got one to spare? Contact him on [email protected]
I am looking to get some t-shirts printed with the Scottish Centre logo. Anyone interested? They will not be very expensive. and I can probably sort out other clothing like polo shirts and fleeces at a later date. Drop me a line if you want one. No obligation.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 4th April 2016
Hi all!
First a reminder of Peter's Run next Sunday, 10th April. There was a last minute emergency as Peter was informed the hotel for the lunch stop has gone bust! A quick change of route by Peter and a new lunch venue and all is well. The new run details are attached. Thanks again to Peter.
The AGM is on the 17th April at the Robertson Arms in Carnwath. Hope to see some of you there!
David Rankin is beavering away sorting out the details of the Northern Ireland Run on 6-9th August . If you aare interested, get in touch with him at info@agri-web.co.uk or with myself.
Jim McKillop has decided to offer for sale the unique Hardaker Velocette. It is a supercharged, Valiant-based road bike built in the 70s by John Hardaker, a Rolls-Royce aero engineer.
The bike had been dry-stored many years but Jim had it running, found the clutch needed attention, and took it apart. He is selling it as a project. There is a pic of it at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
He would be happiest if it went to a Scottish area enthusiast if possible, so if you are interested, contact him at jim@the-mckillops.co.uk .
Lenny Hartley has been at it again. He has just got a Valiant that needs carbs. I have passed on info to him from Peter Occleston regarding Dellortos, but if you have any suitable originals he would be interested. Get him on liquidlenny@hotmail.com
A few weeks ago I went to see John Paver to collect some wheel rims and have a look at the early Viper he has just finished rebuilding. It had just passed it's MOT and only needed a bit or tweeking with the clutch, so should have hit the road by now. A very nice bike, and you can see a pic of it at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
I had an e-mail from John McCrumb from Elgin. He can't get down to the AGM. He is still rebuilding his 67 Viper and has said that if there are any members in the area who needs parts turned on a lathe to get in touch . He is on whann1515@gmail.com
Paul Williams is progressing well with his Venomised Viper, but is looking for a first gear as the one on his is worn. If anyone has one lying around in a box and they don't need it, please contact him on paul@eowyn.co.uk
Sadly I have been informed that Peter Butler passed away last year. We send condolences to his wife, Margaret.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 10th March 2016
Hi all!
First, a warm welcome to new members Andrew Johnstone, Bill Barclay, Ken Stephen and Paul Williams. Also a welcome back to Ron Martin for finally getting round to rejoining!
I spoke to Ken, who has a long term Velton underway, as well as a Metisse, which should be on the road in the spring. Looks like competition for Lenny Hartley! Ken is going to try to get along to the Aberdeen meetings.
Bill is looking to put an electric start on his Venom. Check out the pictures of it at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html. He is asking for feedback on possible specialists who would fit it for him. He is thinking about Loch Ness Restorations, who seem to have a good reputation, but any information would be welcomed. Contact him on [email protected]
I met up with Paul Williams earlier in the week when he was down in Edinburgh. He is rebuilding his Uncle's Venomised Viper and from the look of the finish on the frame, it will be very nice when he gets it done. Being up in Lochgilphead he doesn't get to see many Velos, so if you are in that neck of the woods, he would love to get in touch. Get him on [email protected]
Speaking of electric starts, Jim Harkins has managed to track down a suitable Venom. He made the long trek south to pick it up and is very pleased with his purchase. He is just finishing of putting an electric start on it. As a result of the new addition, he is reluctantly selling his MSS. Here are the details http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C716321
Lenny Hartley has made another purchase. This time he has bought an alloy KSS engine, I tried to persuade him to put it in his Seymour Metisse frame, but he is looking for either a rigid KSS or MSS frame, or a springer frame. He also is looking for advice on building springer, ie if you can use a prefix 12 box, or if anybody has templates for engine/gearbox plates. Get in touch at [email protected] Lenny has also achieved 25 years membership of the VOC, so congratulations to him!
Gordon Johnston has managed to track down the opening times for the Loanhead Speedway Museum this year. For anyone who has not been, this is a remarkable place. Check out the photos form our visit last year http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Open days this year are:-
Sunday 10th April
Sunday 5th June
Sunday 17th July
Sunday 4th September
Sunday 6th November
Clyde Valley VMCC are going to have a visit on 6th November as last year, so maybe we should join them again. This time Gordon hopes to get to look round rather than having to go straight home with a leaking MSS petrol tank!
A reminder that Peter Oram's Stirling/Perthshire run is on 10th April 2016. This is usually a great event, so we are looking for a good turnout. Full details at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/peters-run-10th-april-2016.html Please note Peter's new e-mail address [email protected]
Royce Limb has finally managed to track down a GTP to restore, and hopefully it will be delivered to him in the near future. I have sent him a copy of the spares list, but couldn't find my handbook to copy. If anyone has one lying around could I get a copy to send on to him?
Jim McKillop is still finding more improvements to make to Ian Spinney's rigid MSS. The exhaust system is long past its best so Ian is looking for a MSS rigid pre-war exhaust system, in whole or part, new old stock or repro, or ideally used with patina to suit his unrestored bike. If you have anything that would suit contact Ian on - [email protected] or 07973671773.
A reminder that our AGM will be at the Robertson Arms Hotel in Carnwath on Sunday 17th April. We chose this date because the weather should be good enough for members to ride in, but knowing our luck, it will be snowing that day! Official papers will come out in a few days, but the plan is to meet up for lunch, then get the official business over with so we can have a good get together afterwards. If anyone has any bits they want to dispose of, it might be an idea to have a small bring and buy sale as part of the day too. Any thoughts?
Dave Rankin is still working away on plans for the proposed Northern Ireland trip around 6-9th August. Anyone who is interested, contact Dave on [email protected] or myself. I’ll circulate more details as they become available.
Finally, it is the Scottish Motorcycle Show at Ingliston this weekend, with the Classic Bike Hall being the main draw for most of us. I will be around on Sunday and know a few other club members will be there too, so see you there!
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 24th February 2016
Hi all!
David Rankin just got back to me about the possible Northern Ireland trip. He had been waiting for Lisburn Council to confirm the date of the race meeting and run to Dundrod circuit. He thinks it is to be on the 8th August, and he proposes. starting at Lisburn then to the Dundrod race circuit and do a few laps, then return to Lisburn for a reception (tea and sandwiches) organised by the Council. Dougie Milligan mentioned that he had been to see a really good bike collection on a previous visit, so if he can remember the details David can arrange a visit to this too. We will arrange firm detail when we have an idea of numbers, so if you are interested, drop me a line as soon as possible.
Rob Falconer has decided to sell his MSS, as he has now converted his Venom from Clubman to touring trim. This means that the MSS is not getting the use it deserves, and he would like to find a new home for her. Velocette MSS 1960. Original Bike, a “proper MSS” with matching numbers, Prefix 14 gearbox, M17/7 Cam. Set up to be ridden. Good general condition, modern BTH Magneto and Alton 12v alternator. Converted to unleaded, TLS front brake, fitted with Concentric, but original Monobloc also supplied. Includes pair Craven panniers.Bike located in central Scotland.£6,250. For photos and more info, contact Rob Falconer on 01337 840288 from Friday or email _[email protected]
Also Dave Williamson is selling his 1958 Venom 500cc. Over the past six years he has made sensible improvements to the bike, whilst retaining originality. These include, new clutch, exhaust, battery, carburettor, gaskets, cables, ammeter, new wheels and tyres. The bike has been garaged during his ownership and before. The bike is in Broughty Ferry. If you are interested ontact Dave on annachalais@googlemail.com

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 19th February 2016
Hi all!
The Haggis Gathering has been and gone. I caught up with a few members there and managed to get a few bits and bobs. Not much Velo stuff on sale, although Rod Mycock managed to sell his MAC trials project. It will make an interesting off road special when it’s finished.
Peter Oram has passed on details of his Spring Perthshire Run on 10th April. It starts at 11am from Dobbies Garden World, Perth, PH1 3JJ (on A85 just west of A9 Junction). It’s always a great day out, so try to get along. Lunch stop sounds tasty! . More details at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/peters-run-10th-april-2016.html
Please let Peter know if you expect to be there. His contact details are 01764 681 300 or email peter-oram@outlook.com (New e-mail address)
Alastair Alexander has dropped me a line to say that the VMCC S & T Regularity Run on 5-7th of August, 2016 , this year will be based at the Cultybraggan Camp near Comrie. Cultybraggan was built as a WW2 high security Prisoner of War Camp. The site is now owned by a Community Trust which is developing the historic Nissen Huts for business and leisure use. For more info contact Dougie Cowie on 01764 653474 or [email protected] . Non VMCC members will be made most welcome. The camp is a firm favourite of Ian Spinney, so he may be tempted to take his MSS for a run.
Speaking of Ian, I am sorry to say his father passed away recently. He lived a full exciting and eventful life, which was recorded in an obituary in the Scotsman.Details are at http://www.scotsman.com/news/obituaries/obituary-peter-spinney-pilot-engineer-and-inventor-1-4029094 Our condolences go to Ian and his family.
David Rankin has suggested that the Centre may want to go on a trip over to Northern Ireland to sample it's hospitality and great roads. There are no firm arrangements yet, but I know that there was a great deal of interest when he brought it up at the Xmas lunch. Drip me a line if you are interested and David can firm up the proposals.
There will be a very well sorted swinging arm MSS coming on the market in the next week or so. I will circulate the details then, so watch this space.
Best wishes

Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 14th November 2015
Hi all!
We had a good turnout of the Velocette clan at Ian Paterson’s ‘From Cinder to Shale’ Speedway Museum at Loanhead on 1st November. It has a spectacular array of machines from the early days of the sport, including Rudge, JAP, Scott, Sunbeam and James, as well as more modern Jawa and Rotax engine bikes, but of interest to us was the sole Velocette in the collection. It is a 1929 411cc KDR which was the mount of ‘Smiling’ Jim Kemster of Wimbledon and looks a splendid mount. Check it out at
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Unfortunately Gordon Gordon Johnston, his MSS had developed a leaking tank, so decided to return home directly before all the petrol seeped away, so missed out on visiting the museum. Luckily he had brought Tom Berrimar along, who rode his 1938 MSS to Cape Town in company with some other Velo mounted chums. It was great to meet him and hear first-hand about some of his adventures. His blog about the journey is at
http://darkstarmotorcycles.tumblr.com/
Now the main point of the e-mail!
If you are coming to the Xmas Lunch at the Robertson Arms Hotel in Carnwath on Sunday 6th December, please drop me a line by Friday, 20th November, giving me your choice from the menu below.
http://robertsonarmshotel.com/food-and-dining/functions/festive-lunch/
This will allow me to confirm numbers to the hotel.
It should be a good chance to have a natter and see what everyone is getting up to before the Xmas tush gets into full swing.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 25th October 2015
Hi all,
Firstly a report on how Ron Sabey is getting on. I spoke to his daughter yesterday. He is still in hospital, but his condition is improving. He is getting physio during the week and will be up to seeing visitors in a couple of weeks. I have passed on the good wishes and get well soon messages I have received from members.
Jim McKillop has told me that Gordon Wilson has been admitted to hospital for open-heart surgery. This was quite a shock since in all the years Jim has known him he has not had a serious illness. Gordon had his op on Wednesday and although very groggy, he is making steady progress. He is unable to have visitors for the next few days but Frances thanks all the well-wishers who have been in touch.
I had a good trip to the Stafford Show last week. I managed to have a chat with our Chairman, Roger Franklin, as well as bump in to Bill Dunlop and Gordon Mowat who were also down hunting for bargains. There were a few Velos in the auction, most from the John Keeley collection, all of which sold well. The fact that James May's Honda P50 moped sold for nearly £1.5k is a bit of madness. Must dig mine out of the back of the garage....
Check out the Bonham's site for more info.

Gordon Johnston tells me that the Speedway Museum at Loanhead has one of its rare open days on 1 November. Clyde Valley Section of the VMCC will be going (arriving at 13:00) and he thought that VOC members might be interested in coming along. The Address is: Edgefield road, Loanhead , Edinburgh EH20 9TB.
The Early Motor Bicycle Run, organised by John McMillan through the VMCC, was a fascinating event. Based at Thornhill, near Stirling, this brought together over 20 veteran and early vintage motorcycles from 1903 onwards for a meander to Loch Ard with the extra delight of the offer of trips trip on a couple of steam launches. The Velocette end was kept up by Willie Malone's Model B two stroke. Bill Dunlop was there on his Wooler and Alastair Alexander on the VMCC 1903 Dreadnought, built build by the legendary' Oily' Karslake, a name to conjure with! There are some photos of the event on the Edinburgh VMCC website, so have a look.

Hope you all liked Ian Spinney's photo on the front of the last Fishtail. He also managed to get a pic in the Evening Times. Good coverage for the VOC and the Distinguished Gentleman's Run. Jim McKillop is currently sorting out a few things on the MSS, so in a few weeks it should be better than ever.
Sticking with Fishtail, an apology to George Ogg. Somewhere is my proof reading I misse that he had been titled as George Orr in the write up of Malcolm's Run. Sorry again George, but given that he is just back from sun filled holiday in Italy, where he has been eying up single cylinder Moto Guzzis, I'm sure he will forgive me!
It's getting to that time of the year again, so if you are interested in coming to our Xmas Lunch at the Robertson Arms Hotel in Carnwath on Sunday 6th December, drop me a line. Have a look at the menu and tell me who is coming with you and what their menu choice is. A great chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones. I have invited the Rudge Enthusiasts Club along again, so we should have a good turnout.

Northern members can look forward to their Xmas dinner on 16th December 2015 at the Newmachar Hotel. Get in touch with Maurice Clarke on 01651 873034 for further details.
I will be starting to look at the programme of events for next year soon, so if you have any ideas, or comments on last year’s events, please get in touch.
A couple of people are looking for Velos to ride.
Duncan MacKinnon is looking for a sprung frame MSS. He had to let his last Venom go due to sciatica making it difficult to start. He is willing to pay up to £5000 for the right one. Contact him on [email protected]
Doug Scott has said that Colin Craig of Loch Ness Restorations in Inverness has a friend who is looking for a Venom or an MSS. If you know anyone who is thinking of selling one Doug would be happy to pass on the information to Colin. (He has done some really good paintwork on Doug's Venom). Contact him on [email protected],
Gordon Mowat is looking to sell his KSS springer special. He is looking for £7000 which is what he paid for it a couple of years ago. There are pics of it on the website at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html . Get in touch with Gordon on [email protected] or07931561898 if you are interested
Finally a bit of begging from me. I am looking for a chronometric speedo for a 1954 Velo MAC. Also for my Viper, a primary drive case band for non screw chain cover, or screw up outer cover. Get in touch if you can help.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 2nd October 2015
I have just received the unhappy news that Ron Sabey has suffered a stroke earlier in the week. He had been looking forward to getting his licence back after his previous illness, and this further condition is a major blow. He is still in hospital, and although it is early days , we wish him a full recovery in time. Although not ready for any visitors, I am sure get well wishes will me most welcome.
Ian Spinney managed to get his photo in the Evening Times after the Distinguished Gentleman's Run. See it here http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html and on the cover of the next Fishtail!
I have put some pics of Jock McComisky's MAC on the site at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html . I anyone is interested in it, please contact Jock at [email protected]
For those interested in veteran bikes there is Scotland's first ever VMCC veteran run tomorrow at Thornhill, near Stirling. Twenty three bikes ranging from 1913 to 1922 will be assembling at the Lion and Unicorn for a 10.30 start and with good weather promised, it should be a great day.
For those hunting that elusive part for their next project, or just a pie and a cake at the cafe, the Lothian and Borders Autojumble will be on at the usual venue at the Drill Hall in Peebles on Sunday. See you there!

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 11th September 2015
Hi to you all!
I had a good time in the Isle of Man and have posted some pics of the Ginger Hall Velo Club meeting on the site. I particularly like Dave Greenwood's t-shirt!
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Malcolm's Angus run went very well, with 7 members turning up, including Maurice Clark coming down from Aberdeen with some other members. Unfortunately someone lost their kickstart pedal, but Malcolm was able to sort something out for him. A write up and some pictures will be available in a few days.
The next meeting is at the Maritime Museum in Irvine this Sunday at about 12 noon.Gordon Mowat reminded me that it be an good idea to tell people that we actually meet at Puffers Cafe on the waterfront. The the maritime museum doesn't actually open on a Sunday. Regulars will know this but first timers might get a wee bit lost. Hope to see you there.
Mick and Linda Elstone were participating in the VMCC Scottish Vintage Gathering on Sunday when they came off their Royal Enfield when the front tyre came off the rim. Mick ended up in Borders General Hospital for a couple of days. Linda says that they are both on the mend now,and we wish them both a speedy recovery.
Peter Turnill has e-mailed to say that because of delays at the printers, this edition of Fishtail has been delayed by about a week. He is hoping to sort something out with the printers to avoid future delays.
Best wishes

Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 24th Aug 2015
Hi to you all!
Well, we had a great turnout at Biggar, with 14 Velos present, with Peter Occleston's KSS only having 2 miles on the clock, as he had only revived his registration from DVLA the day before! It was great to chat to members who came along to the stand and find out how projects were getting on. I will put some photos up on the website in the next few days.
Next up we will have Malcolm's Angus Run on the 6th September. The start is at Sainsbury's car park at Claypotts Junction off the A92 in Dundee, with the run leaving at 11.00am. Any problems, you ban contact Malcolm on 07506330232. I have attached 5 sheets provided by Malcolm for the run details. It should be a good bimble up tho Edzell and back.
The next weekend will be the West Coast Ride In, which will be at the Irvine Maritime Museum as usual. Aim to meet up around noon to grab a sandwich and have a natter. Remember, David Rankin is coming across from Northern Ireland to be there, so make it worth while for him!
I am off to the Manx during the week, and i know Ian Spinney and Jock McComisky will be there too, so if you see any of us , give us a wave!
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 11th Aug 2015
Hope to see a few of you at the Biggar Show on Sunday. For those on the Club Stand, I have just posted the tickets out, so you should get them in the next day or so.
Next.up will be Malcolm's Run on the 6th September, departing from the Dundee area. More details will be sent out next week.
The Sunday after this on the 13th September is the West Coast Ride In . This will again be at the Irvine Maritime Museum, as it has been a popular venue for the last couple of years. It is such a draw that David Rankin is coming across from Northern Ireland especially for the meet, so it would be nice to get a good turnout for him.
Roger Perry has taken a few pictures at the S&T and Scottish Convention, and I have put these up on the website. I heard that peter Oram was very taken with the LEs (!!). Bill Dunlop has decided to keep hold of his KSS, as the deal for the bike of his dreams fell through. If you offer him obscene amount of money, he may reconsider though.
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
On the Member's Bikes page there is also a photo of Bill's KSS along with his mate Gary's rigid MAC on an evening run to Falkland Palace, as well as a couple of shots of Ian Spinney's new rigid MSS.
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html
Ian is only the 3rd owner of the MSS, and after a bit of fettling courtesy of Ron Sabey and Jim McKillop, he has put a few hundred miles under the wheels and the post vintage experience is fully living up to his expectations.
On 20th July I went along to the Edinburgh VMCC Inter Club night at the Ratho Hotel. Bad weather and a an accident on the M8 meant there were fewer people than usual, but with 4 Velo owners, we held our own. Hopefully the weather will be fine for the next one and we can have a car park seething with black and gold.
Like many of you, I will be off the the Manx Grand Prix at the end of the month, so If you see me give me a wave.
Best wishes

Having just got back from holiday on Saturday, I took a quick run down to Biggar on Sunday morning to see the VMCC Sound of the Singles Run leaving for Eskdalemuir. Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 20th June 2015
As you know, our Border Run was a great success, and an update is that we also managed to get our photos in the Berwickshire News, standing outside the Jim Clark Trophy Rooms in Duns. .
As an adjunct to this, a reporter from the Glasgow Herald was doing a bike trip round Northern Ireland, and who should he bump in to, but David Rankin on his way back from the Run. You can read about the run and see the article at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-articles.html .
You will also be able to see an article written by Rob Falconer on his experience of petrol additives for both his Velo and his Jag. Please note that these are simply Rob’s personal experiences and we do not endorse any of the products. Members using any fuel additives do so at their own risk.
Peter Occleston has nearly completed his rebuild of his basket case KSS. Even better, his recent new hip has stood up to the challenge of getting it started. Who needs electric starts when you have the NHS! A dating letter from Roger and it will be back on the road! See pictures of it at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html .
Jock McComisky has acquired a 1953 MAC project. He is looking for a petrol tank and seat for it, so if you have anything that would help hip, drop me a line and I will pass the information on.
Royce Limb is still looking for a GTP or MOV project to keep him busy. If you have anything that might be of interst to him, drop me a line.
We have been invited by the Edinburgh Section of the VMCC to their Inter-Club Invitational Evening Ride In on Monday 20th July at 7.30pm. This is at the Ratho Park Hotel. It was good gathering last year, with a few Velo Club members in the throng. Drop me a line if you are interested, or check out their website at http://edinburghvmcc.weebly.com/ .
Our next Centre outing will be the Biggar Show on Sunday, 16th August. Ron Sabey is putting the finishing touches to his MAF and plans to have it at the show. If you want to be on the Club stand, please get in touch as soon as possible.
The Centre would like to give a vote of thanks to Mike Spink for his hard work as Membership Secretary. I miss Mike’s old hand written membership cards, and hope he enjoys his free time now he doesn't have to chase us up all the time for our subs!
We would also like to give thanks to Jim Plant for his hard work over the years as Chairman. He has managed to get to all of our Galloway/Borders Runs over the years and has shown great interest in the Centre. Sometimes controversial, there is no disputing his long term commitment to the club and we look forward to his continued words of wisdom in Fishtail in the future.
Best wishes

Hi all!
That's the Borders Run over for this year. You can read what we got up to and see some photos on the website.

http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
Next event is the Biggar Show on the 18th of August. If you want to put your bike on the VOC stand, drop me a line.
Brian Cook managed to sell his Venom within a few days of his advert, and it has gone to a member in the West, who we hope will have as much fun with it as Brian.
It would be nice to put some more technical information on the site. if you are doing a rebuild, or any any maintenance to your bike, send us a few pics ,and details of the highs and lows. Meanwhile I will get back to the garage to make a bit of progress with my Viper rebuild. It has only been 20 years so far....

Maurice Clark has just told me that Charlie Lawson from Peterhead had died in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. He had cancer and was going in for an operation at the end of last year, but it seems that the cancer was too far gone. We give our condolences to his family
I also apologise for the lack of Scottish Centre report in the last Fishtail as I missed the deadline because of my holiday. I have put a copy of Peter Oram's report on the Spring Run on the website as well as a photograph of the lucky participants.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 5th April 2015
Thank's to all the members who came along to the AGM last week. It was a good get together and hopefully the business of the meeting wasn't too boring.
Jim McKillop was awarded with the John Wheeler Shield in recognition of the support and advice he has given to members over the years, and Brian Cook and Ron Sabey were presented with commemorative quaiches, and given the positions of Honorary Committee Members to the Centre for their services to the Centre Executive. Check out this photo of them with their trophies. http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
As Brian was standing down as Chairman, he was thanked for his contribution to the club over the years. Keith Burdon was elected to replace him. Stewart Winton and myself were re-elected as Treasurer and Secretary. We wish Keith good luck in his new position.
More important than the AGM however is to remind you that Peter's run is next Sunday, 12th April from Dunblane Cathedral car park departing promptly at 11.00am. Please park trailers and vans beside the Police Station on the B8033. Marks & Spencer's is on that same road, and has a cafe etc.
Please note that Morning Worship in the Cathedral begins at 10.30 am, so please be considerate.
Please arrive with plenty of petrol as there are no filling stations in Dunblane, or anywhere directly on the run. If coming from the South, fill up in or before Stirling. Coming from the North, Balhaldie Shell is ideal. The trip includes a visit to a club member's large garage full of Velos and vintage tractors so is not to be missed.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 18th February 2015
Well, my first run of the year on my 1934 MAC was to the Lothian and Borders club’s Frostbite Run on. All went well at first as I sped past the point where on my first run last year I ground to halt as the cam chain on my Sunbeam S8 decided to break and leave me stranded in the middle of the countryside. Serves me right for not taking a Velo I hear you say… Anyway, the MAC sailed on as I gazed across the snow flecked fields in the bright winter sunshine. Unfortunately the light began to dim and the black tarmac began to be obscured by more of the white stuff. Within a couple of minutes the snow was falling hard and the road had started to merge with the rest of the countryside. Luckily the Leadburn Inn, meeting place for the run, was only a couple of miles down the road, so I rode in over the virgin layer of snow over the car park and put it on its side stand. A reviving bacon rolls and a cup of coffee later a few more hardy riders arrived, mostly on 80s and 90s trail bikes, with our own Alastair Alexander arriving on his Yamaha tiddler. It was decided that as the snow was getting even thicker that the run should be cancelled, so we stayed in the bar and had nice chat and lunch , by which time the weather had picked up a bit and the snow cleared we could make our way home.
The Haggis Gathering at Lanark Market on the 1st of February saw members out in force. The two Peters, Oram and Occleston were there, along with Ian Spinney, Keith Burdon, Gordon Mowat, Bill Malone and probably a few more that I didn’t spot. Not too much Velo stuff around, although I picked up a parts book for a MAC and others picked up bits and bobs for their rebuilds.
Hopefully the weather for the ride in to the AGM on 29th March at the Robertson Arms in Carnwath will be a bit warmer and we hope for a good turnout.
Peter Oram’s run round the Perthshire countryside is on the 12th of April. Peter promises a surprise as there is a visit to a Velo club member who has invited us along to see his motorbikes, and large collection of Vintage tractors. They are all housed in an excellent modern building. As Peter is the only one who knows where it is, you will have to follow him! Tea, biscuits and something warming will be provided. Give him a ring on 01764 681300 if want to go along.
Arrangements for our midweek Borders Run on Tues 19th and Wed 20th May 2015 are going well. It looks like we have already filled up the Lauderdale Hotel, www.lauderdalehotel.co.uk/ , but there are still rooms available at the excellent Black Bull Hotel, www.blackbull-lauder.com/, where we have also arranged discounts. There is camping available at the Thirlestane Castle Caravan Park in the villagewww.thirlestanecastlepark.co.uk/. For more details, contact me or check our website, www.velocettescotlandtland.weebly.com/ .
I have just heard today that this year’s Arran Classic Bike show is going ahead after all, and will be on the weekend of July 17/18/19th.There will be a big Matchless and AJS Owners Club turnout, if you want to meet up with the opposition, but unfortunately Lenny Hartley will be off the island that weekend as he will be at Chimay instead!
I have been contacted by Royce Limb from Perth, who is looking for a GTP to rebuild, as he has recently completed an award winning LE restoration. If you have the makings of a project, or even any bits that would help a rebuild, get in touch with him on 01738850083.
As usual, if you have anything that would be of interest to members. be it rebuilds stories, modifications, details of trips or historic pieces, please get in touch.

Ah! I can hear the doubters say, but what happens if Peter breaks down or some other ill takes him off? Well there is a contingency plan, so do not worry on that account.
We return to Dunblane over Sheriffmuir. If the jolly boys and girls from Aberdeen want to head off north straight after seeing the collection, they can be excused without penalty.
I will provide clear directions with mileages between signposts. Expect to get back in Dunblane around 4.30pm.
I am aware the Forfar Jumble is on this very day. If you have to go there—think of the rest of us riding Velocettes in magnificent countryside on quiet roads in warm Spring sunshine.(????)

Start— Dunblane Cathedral car park. Depart promptly at 11.00am. Please park trailers and vans beside the Police Station on the B8033. Marks & Spencers is on that same road, and has a cafe etc.
NB. 1. Arrive with plenty petrol. There are no filling stations in Dunblane, or anywhere directly on the run. If coming from the South, fill up in or before Stirling. Coming from the North, Balhaldie Shell is ideal.
NB.2. Morning worship in the Cathedral begins at 10.30 am, so please be considerate.
Our morning route takes us through Kinbuck, Braco, Comrie, past Glen Turret Distillery, Menzie Castle and Amulree to Dunkeld for the lunchtime stop. Park in the large public car park on the left at the far end of the town. (Toilets 20p charge)
There is a choice of hotels and cafes in which to eat, so you can opt for whatever takes your fancy at the time. It is worth taking the short walk around the Cathedral grounds and also to admire Telford’s arched bridge.
After an hour or so, and departing at an agreed time, we make for Auchterarder, firstly crossing the Tay at Caputh. We then go via Luncarty, Pitcairngreen, St Davids and Kinkell Bridge. Please congregate in the Free Car Park in the centre of Auchterarder. (More public toilets and Simon Howie butchers on corner)
THEN---YOU ARE IN FOR A SURPRISE!
A Velo club member who lives half a mile away has invited us along to see his motorbikes, (yes-- Velos mostly) and large collection of Vintage tractors. They are all housed in an excellent modern building, and because I may be the only one among you who knows where it is, you will have to follow me! Tea, biscuits and something warming will be provided.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 8th January 2015
A Happy New Year to you all!
It was good to see a couple article from Scottish Centre members in the last Fishtail. Thanks to George and Bill for their input. Copies are on the Scottish Centre at website at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-stories.html.
You might also be interested in the clipping I received regarding the Velo GTP being used to climb Criffel in 1935. I am tempted to try to repeat this feat as an 80th anniversary celebration, but I have to get one of my GTPs running first!
We had an amazing turn out to our Xmas Lunch, which we held jointly with the Rudge Enthusiasts Club, with over 30 guests turning up to the Robertson Arms in Carnwath (see photo by Tim Miller at http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html ). Old friends met up again, and hopefully a few new acquaintances were also made. The raffle made a tidy sum for the Centre, and hopefully a few happy people went home with the Velo based prizes, including Velocette wine and whisky!
Our next major event will be the AGM, which will also be at the Robertson Arms, this time on Sunday 29th March 2015. As you may know, Brian Cook has decided to stand down as Chairman after many years of dedicated service to the Scottish Centre, so we are looking for candidates for this post. Drop me a line if you want to know more about what might be involved.
We are also looking forward to Peter Oram’s Run on 12th April 2015. This will again be a trip through highways and byways of Stirling and Perthshire. Contact Peter on 01764 681300 for more details.
Our midweek Borders Run will be based in the picturesque village of Lauder in the Scottish Borders, 27 miles south east of Edinburgh and will take place on Tues 19th and Wed 20th May 2015. There should be an advert in the next edition of Fishtail.
The event will be based at the Lauderdale Hotel, http://www.lauderdalehotel.co.uk/ , where we have arranged for a discounted B&B rate and where we will be having a Run Dinner and Social on Tuesday night. We have also arranged a discounted rate at the Black Bull Hotel in Lauder http://www.blackbull-lauder.com/ . There are a limited number of rooms available, so please book early by contacting the hotels directly, mentioning the run.
There is camping available at the Thirlestane Castle Caravan Park in the village. http://thirlestanecastlepark.co.uk/ . There are a limited number of places available, so please book early by contacting the site directly. The cost of the run will be £12 to cover both days. Please contact me for further details and an application form.
On winter rebuild news, Keith Burdon is starting work on his BMW plunger modded rigid ( http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-bikes.html). He is still waiting to find out if it started life as a MSS or KSS, but whatever the option, it will be a very individual bike when it is finished. Any info on these Spanish origin frame upgrades would be appreciated.
If you want to try to meet up with more motorcycle enthusiasts this year, Alastair Alexander, Chair of the VMCC Edinburgh (Auld Reekie) Section and long standing VOC member has invited all VOC members to come along to their club nights on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Ratho Park Hotel, 101 Dalmahoy Road, Kirknewton, Edinburgh, EH27 8EG. You don't even have to join the VMCC! Next meeting will be a talk by George Plumb on his rebuild of a vintage Ariel. If you are interested, either come along, or contact George Plumb, Section Secretary,at [email protected] or 0131 333 3336.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 11th December 2014
Hi everyone.
Thanks to all who turned up at the Robertson Arms Hotel! Hope you had a good time. In the end we had over 30 come along including our Rudge friends, which is a recent record for a Scottish Centre event. We also made £122 towards club funds with the raffle and mug, coaster card sales. Tim Miller took a great photo of us all and you can see it on the website.
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/past-events.html
I have also finalised the programme of events for next year. This includes all the favorites , including Peter's Run and Malcolm's Run as well as the Aberdeen meetings.
We also have our 2 day midweek rally in Lauder this year on 19th and 20th May. It will be based in the Lauderdale Hotel, with a dinner on the Tuesday night. We have also managed to get a preferential rate of £60 per night bed and breakfast for single occupancy. The Thirlestane Castle Caravan site is at the top of the village, and will be accepting bookings from January. Brian has already set out the first days run and will include a visit to the Jim Clark Museum in Duns. More details soon.
For programme details hit the link below.

Ron Sabey has passed on a request he has received from David Adams. He has been wondering if it is possible to track down his previously owned Thruxton.
He lives in Ipswich, and I sold his bike Velo to someone from Penicuik many years ago and wonders if he still owes it. The guy travelled down from Penicuik and met him at a a garage in the Newmarket area to do the deal. As he sold the bike to buy a new Trident, it must have been the early 70s and unfortunately he can't remember the reg number. Here is a pic of David's bike. He also put a photo in Classic Bike July 2013 issue. If you can help, phone David Adams on 0779 393 8874 or dj_adams142@hotmail.com
All that's left is to wish you all a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 24th November 2014
Hi everyone!
Well the total for the Xmas lunch has now reached over 40, so hopefully a good time will be had by all! There will be a raffle of unmissable items, so remember to bring some change with you!
Our esteemed Chairman, Brian Cook managed up to the Aberdeen meeting earlier in the month and was very pleased at the good turnout and warm reception that he received. Anyone wanting to go along to future meetings can check dates with Maurice Clarke [email protected]
Ron Sabey reports that he has had a number of emails from A Bowes who was a member and lives in Greenock. There is no text only a website address. These are usually false and if you open the website, at best, your entire list of addresses gets sent the same website address, so if you get an e-mail from this address please delete it without opening.
Bill Dunlop has written a great piece about his recent trio to the Manx on his KSS. I have put it on the website, but hope it will also appear in Fishtail sometime soon.
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-stories.html
A few of our members are looking for early Xmas presents.
Keith Burdon is looking for a Mk2 KSS crankshaft as the one in his most recent project has seen better days and may not be reclaimable.
You may have seen Ian Spinney's recent letter in Fishtail. He is still looking for a rigid girder MSS so if you have one and want to give it a good home.........
I am looking for a 8in Lucas headlamp reflector for my 39 GTP, so if you have one lurking in the garage and you don't need it drop me a line.
If you can help any of the above, please contact me through the website.
I hope to see a lot of you at the Robertson Arms a week on Sunday, but I will take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 1st December 2014
Hello everyone.
First some sad news. Colin Dunbar passed away last week after a long illness. Colin was well known for his collection of Classic machinery and will be missed on the Scottish motorcycling scene. Our thoughts are with his family.
Next, Charlie Lawson has decided that it is time to sell his collection of Velocettes and wants to offer them up to fellow members in the first instance before exploring the usual routes.
Click on the links below and you will be able to look at the photos. Also note that there is a separate word document file within each link with a description for each bike
1958 Venom
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0tjpjs8dl0037zk/AAAJv9u6x8oMqEZJxADs1mCea?dl=0
1958 MSS
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/61uylb8n7696uja/AAD0MP5KumEkvpJe4lbwh7kva?dl=0
He has a third bike which he is in the final stages of completing which is a very nice Clubmanised Venom. There is only a couple of days work left to complete it and it needs a new 12volt alternator. The engine has had a complete overhaul and the paintwork is new. It's fitted with mostly new parts including electronic ignition. It also comes with an original set of new Smiths clocks which were bought new in 1973 but have only now been fitted to the bike. The photo is of the bike before work started. The bike has a transferable number 22 PTU . Price for this one is £8500.
If you are interested Charlie can be contacted on 07801 612095.
Finally, for all going to the Xmas lunch, it would speed things up if we could give our orders to the hotel by Friday. Have a look at the menu and tell me your choice and I will send them the info.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 7th November 2014
Hi to you all!
With winter almost upon up most of us will have tucked up our pride and joy, although there are bound to be a few hardy souls freezing on their bikes rather than in the workshop!
Firstly I would like to welcome some new members to the Scottish Centre. Dougie Robertson, Dougie Robertson, Michael Hambly, Peter Smith and Gordon Williamson have all joined the club within the last few months. Some are old hands and others are new to the Velo scene.
There are now well over 30 confirmed guests to the Xmas lunch at the Robertson Arms, Carnwath on the 7th of December. Our numbers have swelled partly due to the fact that we have invited the Rudge Enthusiasts Club to join us. Because of this we have been moved to the Function Suite, so there is room for a few more if you haven't yet booked, but please contact me as soon as you can. Arrangements to arrive for 12.30ish for a 1 o'clock start. Here is a link to the lunch menu.
http://robertsonarmshotel.com/christmas-day-menu-2014/festive-lunch-menu/
We have had over 500 hits on the website already, so at least some of you have had a peek!
I have added a few things to it, firstly a story by George Ogg about his trip to Australia to pick up a new centre stand......We had hoped that it would be in Fishtail by now, but we have been assured it will be in the next edition.
http://velocettescotland.weebly.com/members-stories.html
The next is the result of Gordon Johnston having a routine visit to the outpatients dept, and finding his doctor had ridden a Velo to Cape Town! Here is the link to the site describing his adventures.
http://darkstarmotorcycles.tumblr.com/
Also our esteemed Club Chairman Jim Plant has had a look at the site and found some typos and inaccuracies I had missed. If you are having a trawl through the site and see anything that needs change, please get in touch as after playing around with the site for so long, I sometimes miss the obvious glitches.
Finally, I have to inform you that after many years of service to the Scottish Centre, Brian Cook has intimated that he will not be standing for the post of Chairman at the next AGM. We are sad at Brian's decision and appreciate the enthusiasm and effort he has put into the club over the years.
This means that if you are interested if getting more involved in the running of the club, there is an opening at the AGM. If you want to know more about what's involved, contact Brain or myself, or have a chat at the Xmas lunch. And remember, if you don't turn up to the AGM, we might decide to elect you anyway!

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 1st October 2014
I have received the following sad news from Ron Sabey regarding another Ron, Ron Lintott, one of our stalwart Scottish Centre members.
Ron Lintott
Some of you will know that Ron Lintott had been terminally ill for some time. He died on 25th September.
I believe Ron was a toolmaker to trade and that certainly showed on his Velocette. He once said to me that two days a week he helped with the shopping and two days a week he used his skill in the workshop to make better detail parts for his Velocette. It certainly showed.
To have Ron and Jennie at so many events was a pleasure. Lanark, Biggar and the AGMs were always a pleasure to meet them both. The event at Denholm was the best. The photo I took of Ron there is one of my favourite motorcycle photos.
Last year Ron turned up at both the Border’s Run lunch stop at Wilton Park, Hawick where the museum has sections dedicated to Jimmy Guthrie and Steve Hyslop and also at the Guthrie Rally at Denholm.
The funeral time is 12 noon on 8th October. It would nice for us to have Ron in our thoughts at that time.
Ron Sabey
Our thoughts are with Jennie and Ron's family at this time of loss.

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 23rd September 2014
Hello! there are quite a few things to pass on in this update, so I'll get right to it!
First thing is that the webpage is finally ready. The address is here . Please have a look at it and suggest any changes or improvements that you want. Please note I have left in contact e-mail addresses for people looking for advice or parts when I copied the Update e-mails onto the site. If anyone feels that these should not go on the site, please tell me. Pictures of the recent runs have been posted in the Gallery section.
There have been a good response for the Xmas Lunch, Sunday 7th December 2014 at the Robertson Arms, Carnwath.
We have 8 members coming already. Here is the link for the menu.
http://robertsonarmshotel.com/festive-lunch-menu
If you are interested, please drop me a line so I can update the booking.
Malcolm Kervell's run on 7th Sept, set off from Morrison's Superstore, just off the Kingsway in Dundee. The number of riders was lower than last September but made up in quality. There was Tony Mortishire and Sue on a Norton Twin (Velo being rebuilt), Bryan Connell on a Venom and Alan Griggs on an MSS, all having had a long run down from Aberdeenshire. This left George Ogg Venom from Edinburgh and Peter Oram on a Venom from Crieff. Malcolm from Fife was on his Viper Veeline.
The run used minor roads around the north of Dundee and then headed across Strathmore to Glenisla, in the Angus hills, then on to Glen Clova via Kirriemuir. Peter Oram headed the run very well, with Malcolm keeping up the rear, in case of any problem enroute. After a very acceptable lunch at the Glen Clova Hotel they completed the run up to Glen Doll, along a very narrow twisting lane, up to the Forestry Commission visitor centre, for an appreciative view around the glen. As they were now further North, the members decided to return to their various homes after getting back to the Kirriemuir area, leaving Malcolm as the only rider to return to Dundee and on to Fife across the Tay Bridge. The run was enjoyed by all, with good dry and bright weather. The route was mainly confined to B and C roads, which suits most Velo riders.
The Irvine Maritime Museum ride in on the 21st September was blessed with great weather, and had a turn out of 8, 4 of those on Velos, with the other's being made up of MZ, Ducati, Enfield and Vincent. The roll call was Gordon Mowat, Keith Burdon, Ron Martin, Jim Mckechnie, Tim Miller, Davies Donaldson plus a couple of guys from the VMCC Clyde Valley section.. Most stayed about an hour and there was a reluctance by some to getting their photos taken. They are obviously on the 'Most Wanted List'! Keith Burdon had made a day of it on the rigid MSS, taking in the Vincent Owner's Club rally at Ken Bridge on the way back to cover about 240 miles.
Charlie Lawson from Peterhead has just got a new project bike on E-bay. It is a half Clubmanised Venom started in the 70's, so he is looking for some parts to finish the job. He is looking for a timing cover, complete with machined hole for rev counter, a rev counter gearbox and a twin leading shoe brake, so if you have either of these spare, contact him on [email protected] . Alternatively if anyone knows the machining sizes for the timing cover, Charlie can get the work done.
Following the advice he received from a previous post, Jim Farrington has now bought a Miller four position headlamp switch to help cure his electrical woes. His question is whether he should now wire up the new switch in the same way that the old switch (the one with the resistor) was wired up? There is currently a wire going into the Charge electrode, and he want's to know if he should retain this. He can be contacted on [email protected] .
That's all at present, so enjoy the last good weather of the year and start planning those jobs to sort out over the winter, and if you have any suggestions for events for next year's diary, get in touch as we start putting it together next month.
Best wishes

Hello! there are quite a few things to pass on in this update, so I'll get right to it!

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 20th August 2014
One of the things I miss since I retired is having an IT section to sort out my computer foul ups! This is way of an explanation to those of you who are receiving an update from me for the first time. I hope I have finally sorted out the circulation list, having found the e-mail addresses from Ron's list that I had not originally picked up on.
Also apologies for my last update as it had more than the usual amount of typos in it!
Well that's Biggar over for another year. A good turnout, with Alan Parker, Dodkin Viper, Andy Spence, Venom, George Ogg, Venom, Malcolm Kervell, Viper, Roger Perry, Venom, and myself, Girder MAC. We were also joined by Willy Williams and his wife, who had travelled all the way down from Thurso to be there, although unfortunately he had to slum it on his Vincent! Nice also to meet all the members who came to the pitch to have a chat.
Ron Sabey couldn't make the show, but I visited him a couple of weeks ago and he was looking very well, and trying to hack a bent spindle out of the back wheel of his Venom, so well on the road to recovery! Also a belated thanks for sorting out the mix up in last years accounts and his donation to the funds.
Malcolm's Dundee Run is the next the outing, on 7th September. Malcolm and Roger Perry have ridden the course and updated the instructions to account for road closures etc. The instructions and maps are attached, but please get in touch with Malcolm Kervell on 01337830452 to confirm you are going.
After this we will have our West Coast Ride In on 21st September. Hopefully the weather will stay fine for it! Get in touch with me for further details.
A few requests for help from members.
Jock McComisky has had a problem with his Venom's gearbox. After a lock up, he replaced all the bearings. It went well for the first 100 miles or so with all gears engaging, however the box will now jump out of first even on light acceleration. Jock was wondering if anyone else had similar problems and what the solution might be. Current best guess is the bushes, but any words of wisdom welcome. He is on <[email protected]>,
Next is from Liquid Lenny. He has been very lucky to acquire an original bare Rickman Metisse Frame from Ralph Seymour's shop, delivered in 1974. Lenny plans to build it up as a Seymour Velocette, so is looking for an appropriate engine , gearbox, front forks. and rear wheel. Contact him on <[email protected]>.
Finally Peter Occleston is building up a KSS mk2 engine. He is looking for info on setting up the OHC and some info on cam profiles as he thinks his have been reprofiled in the past. get him on <[email protected]>.
I am trying to put together a website for the Scottish Centre. If you have anything in the way of pictures or info I can put in it , please contact me. I would like to do a members bike section, so if you have any photos of your Velos it would be nice to put them on. Obviously there will be no individual members contact details on the site.
Best wishes

Velocette Owners Club Scottish Centre Update 12th July 2014
Hi All!
I am now back from my holiday in Prague.
I would recommend a visit to the Czech Technical Museum. Not only does it have a range of displays on architecture, design, printing and television, but a wonderful transport section. As well as First World War fighters, the odd Spitfire and 1930's Grand Prix Mercedes and Bugatti , it has a wonderful motorcycle collection. It covers the history of the Jawa pretty comprehensively, including a 60's v4 racer similar to the one Bill Ivy was killed on. Other rarities include 1930 Scott and a Bohmerland in bright yellow and red. No Velos unfortunately.....
Peter Oram has given me updated info on his run on 20th July.
The run will departing from the Woodside Hotel, Stirling Road, Doune, FK16 6AB at 11.00am.
It is a circular trip of a total of 83 miles through magnificent scenery in Stirlingshire,The Trossachs, and Perthshire.
The lunch stop is at an excellent, reasonable priced establishment. To assist with this catering, please let Peter know if you are attending and will want to eat there ( Tel. 01764 681 300 email [email protected])
.
Anyone bringing their own sandwiches will be very jealous of the rest of them! Weather permitting, you will be able to eat outside and enjoy the views as well as the food.
Clear, correct, easily read route sheets will be issued at Doune. (and maybe even a map or two)
Peter will email route sheets to anyone who wishes to remove the mystery element. It will not then be a surprise though!
If anyone is bringing their bike by trailer, DO NOT PAR K IN THE WOODSIDE CAR PARK. Please park in the adjacent street.
Gordon Mowat has asked me to give a final reminder for the Clyde valley VMCC informal Sound of the Singles run this Sunday (tomorrow) from Biggar at 10.30. I hope hope to get along to see the start, so might see some of you there.
Any news on the Velos in your garage. or feedback on any events would be appreciated, Stories of what you have been up to might tempt others along to the next event.
